Teacher Information
This lesson was developed as part of the eMINTS program in Maine.
This lesson involves creating a home plan proposal to present
to others. In following the specifications, students will learn
about design, measurement and tool skills required to complete the
project. They will also develop skills in working as a team and
in persuasive presentation skills.
Learners
The focus is on middle school learners although it could
very well be used at the high school level as well. It is
anchored in middle school numeracy and literacy.
Learners should have basic computer and Internet skills prior to the
lesson although they will be developing more advanced skills in process
skills and with several new applications during the sessions.
Standards
NCTM Standard: Geometry
Analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional
geometric shapes and develop mathematical arguments about geometric
relationships
Use visualization, spatial reasoning, and geometric modeling to solve problems
NCTM Standard: Measurement
Understand measurable attributes of objects and the units, systems, and processes of measurement
Apply appropriate techniques, tools, and formulas to determine measurements
Primary Mathematical Goals
Estimate and measure objects
Create and interpret scale drawings
Use and compare different methods for estimating areas of rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, and other polygons
Use compass construction techniques to create nets for three-dimensional shapes such as prisms and pyramids
Use area formulas to calculate areas of rectangles, triangles, and trapezoids
Use a scale factor
Use a cost factor to estimate total cost based on area
